Salon #37: Welcome to New York!

Moving to the Big Apple is very difficult decision to make if you are a young designer. You may be thinking: How do I get a place to live? How do I start networking? How do I present myself as a designer? And most importantly how do I get design work?

Join Wingspace and XO Projects for a discussion about all of these topics and more. Salon #35: Regional Theater: an open dialogue

A new 829 committee has recently been appointed to represent USA designers working around the country. Join members of the committee, fellow regional designers & directors and those interested in working regionally to discuss the State of Regional Theater. Puppetry is as old as theater itself. Throughout history puppets have played numerous roles in the act of performance and storytelling. Join Wingspace and XO Projects for a discussion with contemporary puppet artists about what puppetry means to them. What can a puppet say and do that a performer cannot? How do puppetry and design intersect in the theater?

Wingspace Theatrical Design and XO Projects invite you to our next salon Designers and Assistants. Assistants are now ubiquitous in all aspects of theatre production, but every designer works with them differently. The role of assistants is an important and contentious part of current labor negotiations. Tyler Micoleau, lighting designer and member of the USA829 Off Broadway committee, guest-moderates a conversation about the designer-assistant relationship. Designers and assistants, union and non-union are welcome.

Special Event: Jan Versweyveld

Wingspace Theatrical Design and XO Projects invite you to a special conversation with the Belgian designer Jan Versweyveld. The in-house designer for Toneelgroep Amsterdam since 2001 and long-time collaborator of Ivo van Hove, Versweyveld’s work in New York this season includes A View from the Bridge, David Bowie and Edna Walsh’s Lazarus at New York Theater Workshop and the upcoming Broadway revival of The Crucible. Join us as we discuss his work as lighting and scenic designer, his approach to materials and his perspective on European traditions of stage design.
