Lianne is a video & scenic designer who focuses on new and experimental uses of video and sculpted spaces in performance and installation. Her work extends through theater, opera, music, dance, film and art installation. Named a “Young Designer to Watch” by Live Design Magazine, the heart of Lianne’s philosophy focuses on video as character (and in extension, scenery & object as character). With every design, particularly with her video work, she spends copious energy developing the psychological entity of the design - whether it is an extension of the protagonist’s internal experience or a force against it. The video content and system design (the means of delivering the content onstage) then become theatrical tools through which the character of the design is made real. In addition, she loves engaging in the rhythm and musicality of visual design onstage and is prone to pulling from the vocabulary of music when shaping visual performance with her collaborators.
Select works: Such Nice Shoes (TheaterLab), You Are Here (The Kitchen/Jane Comfort & Co.), Spam (Jack), The Astronaut’s Tale (BAM), The Elephant in Every Room I Enter (La Mama), How to Live on Earth (HERE), Patty: The Revival (Highways Performance Space). She has worked with composers John King (Dice Thrown - randomly generated opera), Robin Cox (Hourglass - participatory dance improv), and Earl Maneein (Seven Suns - heavy metal string quartet). And she has collaborated with visual installation artists Leslie Kerby, Natalia Margolis, Fariba Alam & Urban Matter Design Firm. Lianne was the Associate Projection Designer on A Midsummer Night’s Dream directed by Julie Taymor (TFANA) and on Party People directed by Liesl Tommy (The Public Theatre). She proudly holds an MFA from CalArts.
