Virtual Salon #37: New Opera Now
Right now, there is a generation of new opera that is taking the reins to focus on unrepresented and neglected voices in ways that are unique to the form which is traditionally stuck in a limited repertoire. From introducing diverse voice types to new characters to staging pieces in unconventional locations with blended technology, conventions are being broken and new traditions established. We now want to ask - what is opera doing right now that theater and other performance is not? How can we reimagine opera for new younger audiences while engaging the current opera audiences? How can opera tell these stories more effectively than any other medium?
Join Wingspace for a conversation with Jasmine Arielle Barnes, Noelle Deutsch, Priti Gandhi, Lila Palmer, Nehemiah Rolle, and Vita Tzykun. Moderated by Anna Driftmier, that will focus on reimagining opera for the next generation. By introducing diverse voice types, welcoming new audiences, and engaging with innovative technology and staging, opera is evolving as a creative practice. Our panelists will discuss the future of American opera and their place in it.
Thursday, April 28th, 8pm ET / 5pm PT via Zoom, Facebook Live
