Born and raised in Washington Heights , Ásta (“ow-sta”) currently lives in Brooklyn. In college she studied Italian poetry, art history and aspired to being the second coming of Susan Sontag. Instead she got hooked on collaborative artmaking and slogged her way through downtown theater, eventually got her MFA in Theater Design at CalArts where she designed puppetry and sets as well as clothes. She is a founding member of minor theater with her best friend Julia Jarcho (now in residence at HERE arts center with their upcoming adaptation of Woyzeck: Marie It’s Time). She is a member of The Mad Ones and designed Mrs. Murray’s Menagerie and Miles for Mary. Favorite directors include: Will Davis, Lee Sunday Evans, Jordan Fein, Emma Griffin, Lila Neugebauer, Tyne Rafaeli, Daniel Aukin.
Favorite projects include world premieres of The Wolves, Men on Boats, Dance Nation and Usual Girls.
