This virtual salon examines the whitewashing of the history of the musical by placing musical theater by and about black people front and center. From Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins's 1879 musical, Peculiar Sam, to Katori Hall's 2019 musical, Tina, the "black musical" does not get the credit it deserves for sustaining the genre we know and love.
