Josafath Reynoso Calvillo
Scenic Design
Award winning scenic designer Josafath Reynoso was born in Mexico. He was awarded the Gold Medal for Scenic Design at the World Stage Design 2017 in Taipei, Taiwan for his production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He also received the 2015 USITT Scenic Design Award, the 2014 SETC Scenic Design Award for Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape; the 2013 BroadwayWorld Award for Our Country’s Good, and the SETC Ready-for-Work Award for The Threepenny Opera. Mr. Reynoso is currently working as the Area Head of the Scenic Design Graduate Program at the University of Texas, Austin; he serves in several committees devoted to International Activities, outreach and to enhance the visibility of young Mexican designers both in the US and Mexico.
In the United States, Mr. Reynoso has designed new productions for Cincinnati Playhouse in The Park, Arizona Theatre Company, Kansas City Rep, Clarence Brown Theatre, Nashville Rep, Serenbe Playhouse, The Warehouse Theatre, Triad Stage, Virginia Stage Company, Virginia Rep, LSU Opera, Lexington Children's Theatre, and Duke University, among others. In Mexico, he has designed productions for Teatro Salvador Novo, Foro Antonio Lopez Mancera, UNAM Facultad de Arquitectura, and Teatro Esperanza Iris. Other international credits include new productions for Teatro del Borde in Argentina, Escena 8 in Venezuela, and KCDC in Israel.
Mr. Reynoso was selected as a designer for the Lincoln Center Theatre 2018 Director’s Lab, a keynote speaker for 2015 Stage|Set|Scenery in Berlin, he was featured at the International Biennale of Architecture in Buenos Aires for his design of Noche Arabe, and has represented the United States in Germany (Stage|Set|Scenery) and The Czech Republic (Prague Quadrennial 2019); and has represented Mexico in Taiwan (WSD 2017), The Czech Republic (PQ07 Scenofest 2007), and Venezuela (Festival Baruta 2006), among others. Mr. Reynoso holds an MFA in Scenic Design from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a BFA in Scenography from Escuela Nacional de Arte Teatral in Mexico City.
