Qingan Zhang

Scenic and Production Design

Qingan Zhang is a scenic and production designer, devising artist and freelance producer mainly based in New York and Boston. Qingan’s works explore narratives beyond forms or performance methods. She seeks to empower physicality within the storytelling of the integrated spatial experience. Through layers of materials, objects, multimedia and objective metaphors, she juxtaposes materiality of the built environment and externalization of the intangible mental fantasy rooted in the narratives.

Selected design credits include The Chinese Lady (Central Square Theater), Nüwa in Fairyland (CHUANG Stage, Boston Theater Critics Association Critics’ Pick), Galileo’s Daughter (WAM Theater), Wolf Play (Brandeis University), Knock Knock (MITU 580), Sophie Blanchard’s High-Flying Rock’n’Roll Extravaganza! (Moxie Arts NY). Qingan’s co-devising puppetry pieces have been showcased at New Ohio Theatre Ice Factory, Rattlestick Theater GFTF, HERE Arts Center SUBLETSERIES: CO-OP! and The Center at West Park Object Movement Festival. Qingan is also a collaborative photographer at The Black and White Gallery and her works were selected by 2024 InFocus Photo Exhibition in Canada.

Qingan is the co-founder of the non-profit interdisciplinary production company Cellunova Productions. Qingan received her MFA degree in interior design from Pratt Institute. She graduated from Boston College with dual BA degrees in Theatre and Psychology and she is a member of Wingspace Theatrical Design.
